What do you think? Do our memories make us? What would potentially change, beyond a reduction in PTSD symptoms (which is no small thing!) if a patient took pills that altered her or his memories? What of some professionals’ reluctance to use this new treatment because they believe survivors shouldn’t have their experiences (aka memories) altered and because doing so would alter their healing processes? When a person has a severe physical injury (say a broken leg with multiple fractures) we don’t say, “Well, we don’t want to give you anything that would alter your pain because that would rob you of the experience of it.”
