The overall Session Long Project (SLP) for MAE570 requires students to begin building a portfolio of resources that may be used in the field of coaching, team administration, and/or sports leadership. A portfolio is a compilation of written materials that reflect an individual’s personal and professional philosophy, while describing knowledge and information related to a specific field of study.
Students will begin development of their portfolio by completing the following sections throughout the session, with one section due each module:
Section 1: Relationship among Educational Psychology, Sports Psychology and Positive Psychology in Sports and Sports Leadership
Section 2: Application of Teaching and Learning Theory to Coaching
Section 3: Role of Constructivism in Learning Sports
Section 4: Self-Assessment and Personal Philosophy
SLP 2
SECTION 2: Application of Teaching and Learning Theory to Coaching
Throughout Module 2, we have been applying teaching and learning theories to coaching. Now it is time for you to begin developing your own personal philosophy of coaching.
Address all three areas below as part of the Module 2 SLP assignment:
Part A: In your personal philosophy, include a summary statement in which the following items are described:
- the manner in which you teach athletes and develop their skills
- the learning theories that guide your teaching/coaching approach
- an explanation of “why” you teach/coach in a certain way
Part B: Your philosophy of coaching statement should also reflect your personal values and the needs of your students, athletes, and institution.
Part C: In addition to describing the items above, your personal philosophy of coaching should also answer the following four questions:
- To what end? (i.e., what are your objectives)
- By what means? (i.e., what methods will you use to achieve your goals)
- To what degree? (i.e., how will you measure performance)
- Why? (i.e., for what purpose… why is coaching important)
Note: Discuss all seven items above (in Parts A, B and C) in your personal philosophy of coaching.
