As we think about the dissertation

process, we want to think about, first of

all, the steps that are in the process.

There are actually six steps through the

process that you’ll be completing one by

one, and you’ll be working with your

dissertation chair from the very first

step of the process all the way through

to the end of the sixth step. And so

let’s just take a couple of minutes here

to talk about these steps and to talk

about the work that’s done in each of

those steps. And so, for Step 1, what

we’re talking about is the proposal step.

And in this step, what you’re going to be

doing is, you’re going to be proposing

what it is that you plan to study. What

is your dissertation, your study, going to

be about? And the way that you do that is

you write it up in the first three

chapters of the dissertation. Chapter 1

is the introduction chapter. Chapter 2 is

the literature review chapter and then

chapter 3 is the methods chapter. And so

you’ll be working with your chair to

perfect that to ensure that you have a good

clear idea of the study that you’re going

to be doing and that you are

communicating it well through the

writing in the first three chapters of

your dissertation. Once your dissertation

chair is satisfied that you do have a

good handle on that and that you’ve

written it up well, then that chair will

move you into step two of the process,

which is to defend the proposal. In the

proposal defense, what you’re going to be

doing is presenting the information that

you have in those first three chapters

and telling them what it is that you plan

to do. And your committee is going to

have some questions for you. They’re

going to have some suggestions for you.

They’re going to ensure that you were

truly ready to move into actually doing

the study. And so you’ll take some time.

You’ll work together during this hour

that you have for presenting this

information. It’s 15 minutes for a

presentation. And then the rest of the

time is spent with the committee asking

you questions and giving you suggestions

to make sure that you’re ready. Once

they are satisfied that you have a good

handle on what it is that you plan to do.

Then you will move into the third step.

But let me say that your dissertation

chair is going to make sure that you are

ready for the defense step before you get

to it. And so you can be assured that

you’ll have a good handle on what’s going

on even though they may still have some

suggestions and some questions for you

during that defense. But once you get

done with the second step of defending

the proposal and the committee is

satisfied with that, then they will move

you into step 3, which is the

Institutional Review Board or the IRB.

With this process, there’s an application

that you fill out online. There’s some

documents that you’re going to need to

submit to them to show them what it is

that you’re planning to do. Their focus

is on making sure that you reduce the

amount of harm that could possibly come

to your participants of your study. And

so, they’re going to make sure that In

your recruiting materials that you are

clearly telling what the study is all

about, that you’re giving your

participants the ability to give

informed consent, that you’re going to

protect their identities, and you’re

going to protect the data that they

provide to you. And so on, to make sure

that you’re doing your study in the most

ethical way possible. Once the IRB is

satisfied that you are indeed doing that,

then you will be able to move into step

number 4, which is to actually conduct

the study. And conducting the study now

is where you actually get to become a

researcher and start doing the work of a

researcher. You’re going to collect the

data. You’re going to analyze the data.

Of course, you’ve got to recruit your

participants and so on because what

you’re going to be doing is, you are going

to be creating this unique research that

has not yet been done. And so you’re

going to go through, you’re going to take

that time to recruit your participants.

You’re going to collect the data in the

methods that you’ve set up from

your proposal. You’re going to analyze

that data. And once you have a good

handle on that, you’ll move into step

number five, which is to report your

findings. And what you’re going to do

with this is, you’re going to report your

findings in chapters 4 and 5 of

your dissertation. Chapter 4 is the

findings chapter. And so, basically, here

you’re just going to be reporting what

you found as you collected your data. And

then chapter 5 is the conclusions chapter.

And in this, you’re going to be really

giving an idea of what the data means

that you collected. And again for

chapters 4 and chapter 5, you’re going to

be following the template that’s provided

in the dissertation handbook. Working with

your chair to make sure that you have

reported the information clearly and

completely. And once your dissertation

chair is satisfied that you have done

that, then you will move into the sixth

and final step, which is the final

defense. Now, it’s going to be very much

like the proposal defense except now what

you’re going to be doing is, you’re going

to be presenting to your committee the

information that you found and the

conclusions that you came to from doing

your study. And so, basically, primarily

what you’ll be doing is reporting the

information that you have already written

up in chapters 4 and 5 of your

dissertation. And once your committee is

satisfied that, yes, you have done a good

study, you’ve collected the data, you’ve

analyzed it well, and you’ve presented

the information in a way that makes

sense, then they will approve your

dissertation. And you will officially be

a doctor at that point. Now, there’s

still some hoops you have to jump

through for the University to complete

graduation. But, essentially, at that

point, you are done. And you are

officially a Doctor of Education.

Courses in the process

EDCO716

EDCO770

EDCO810/900

The presentation will return to home page automatically after audio is complete.

Now, that we’ve completed talking about

the steps in the process. Let’s talk

about the courses that are involved in

the process. The actual courses you’ll

complete depends on whether you’re

enrolled in the old degree completion

plan, or DCP, or the new degree completion

plan. We’re going to take a look at each

of these plans in this section. Everyone,

no matter which DCP you’re on, goes

through three research courses that are

part of your regular coursework. They are

EDCO716, EDCO770 and EDCO810/900. The old plan

lists the course as EDCO810, the new

one has EDCO900, but they’re the same

course. And these three courses are

designed to help you focus on what you

plan to do for your dissertation study.

EDCO716 primarily helps you choose a

topic and learn a little bit about the

dissertation process. EDCO770 helps you

compile a library of sources to be used

for your literature review and to help

with your research methods. EDCO810/900

helps you to develop a draft of your literature

review chapter and your methods chapter.

Once you completed those courses AND the

rest of your coursework, then you’re

ready to start into the dissertation

process on a formal basis. The course you

start with depends on your DCP. So

let’s take a look at the old DCP. And with

the old DCP, you start in EDCO808. This is a

regular 8-week course, like you’ve had

up to this point. And in this course, you

complete an initial draft of your

proposal. Next, you move into EDCO989 and

it’s a 16-week course. You’ll be in this

course until you’re ready to complete the

final defense of your dissertation. Now,

this is where the idea of a marathon

instead of a Sprint really comes into

play. You’ll have already completed an

initial draft of your proposal prior to

getting into this course, but you’ll

complete all but the last step of the

dissertation process in this course. What

that means then is that you’ll complete

the proposal, you’ll defend it. You’ll

submit your information to the IRB and

receive their approval. You’ll conduct

the study and then you’ll write it all up in

chapters 4 and 5 of the dissertation. All

while you’re in this course. That means

it’s likely to take more than one 16

week semester to complete all of this.

Now, the majority of doctoral candidates

take three semesters, which means you

would be enrolled in this course three

times. Once your dissertation chair feels

you’re ready to complete the final

defense. You then move into EDCO990. All

right. Now, let’s look at the new degree

completion plan. The new DCP is similar

to the old one. Except that, instead of

going into EDCO808 to complete an

initial draft of your proposal, you go in

to EDCO988. In this course, you’re going

to complete your proposal including the

proposal defense, and if it takes more

than one semester to get to the point

where you’re ready to defend the

proposal, then you’ll be enrolled in this

course more than once. Once you have

successfully defended your proposal,

you’ll be enrolled in EDCO989 and you’ll

be in that course until your dissertation

chair feels you’re ready to do the final

defense. Then you’ll be able to be enrolled

in EDCO990. With EDCO988 and

EDCO989, you stay in those courses

until you’ve completed the process. So

there again, Marathon not Sprint. Now,

what always happens at this point is

that the question always comes up. How

will you be paired with a dissertation

chair? Well, it’s during EDCO810/900. You will

complete an exercise in that course, in which

you fill out information that completely

explains your study. The title, the

topic, the Gap, the methods, et cetera. And

that information is sent to all the

potential chairs. Now, all of us will read

the information and one of us will

volunteer to work with you on your study.

Kind of an honor. Really. Someone is

choosing you and your study to be part of

guiding you through the process. And this

is an important point to make. You cannot

make it through the process without your

chair. He or she is there to guide you

through the process. And ensures that

your work is an acceptable academic

product as a research project. It’s

important that you follow the guidance of

your chair. So, as you see, the process is

straightforward, but it’s also detailed

and that’s why I’m going to leave you

with this one more time in this section.

The dissertation process is a marathon.

It’s not a Sprint. But you’re up to it

and you can finish it with God’s help.

The presentation will advance to the next slide automatically.

In general terms, a quantitative study

deals with numbers. Now, there’s so much

more that’s different between the two

types of studies, but we’re not going to

go into that here. So, quantitative

studies provide data in numerical form.

There is statistical analysis. There may be

descriptive statistics and quantitative

studies generally test the relationship

between variables. A quantitative

researcher goes into the study with

several hypotheses about the outcome and

uses the study to test those hypotheses.

The study then shows that the hypotheses

were correct or that they were not

correct. For completing a quantitative

dissertation. The approach has shown here

are acceptable. So that means that a

simple correlation or a similar approach

would not be complex enough for an

acceptable dissertation study. Again,

generally a qualitative study does not

deal with numbers. It provides data in

narrative form. Rather than a statistical

analysis, the researcher analyzes themes

found in the data provided by the

participants. The themes are in the

stories they tell you. And the data

itself tells the story. The researchers

go into the study with no hypotheses.

They let the story tell the outcome or

provide the hypotheses. For completing a

qualitative study. The approaches shown

here are acceptable. The other approaches

are much more time-consuming for someone

who’s interested in completing his or her

degree. If someone is interested in

completing a study using one of the other

qualitative approaches, then that’s

something to plan for after graduation.

You may have also thought about a mixed

method studies, which is a combination of

the two. And if you ask some researchers,

they will say there is no such thing as a

mixed method study. However, even if

you are a Believer, do not plan to

conduct a mixed method study because

it’s too complex for a dissertation. It

is not just a mix of methods. It’s really

conducting two complete studies in one.

Again. That’s too involved for someone

who is interested in graduating. The

research questions really determine which

approach you’re going to take. You want

to use the approach that will best answer

your research questions. Now, at this

point, the only activity you have left to

complete in this presentation is to take
