Sexual selection refers to adaptive changes in males and females that lead to an increased ability to secure a mate. Each sex has a different strategy with regard to sexual selection. Since females produce few eggs, the choice of a mate is very serious. However, males can father many offspring because they continuously produce sperm in a high quantity. Therefor, males often compete in order to inseminate as many females as possible. Because of this, sexual selection in males usually results in an increased ability to compete with other males for a mate. On the other hand, sexual selection in females favors the choice of a single male with the best fitness, or the ability to produce surviving offspring. Males often demonstrate their fitness by coloration or elaborate mating rituals.

Camouflage and coloration can help with survival between a prey and a predator. These camouflage adaptions has another name also called cryptic coloration. These mechanisms and tactics help with defense, disguise, and movements. These help mask identity as well. Physical characteristics such as feathers and scales for instance is a camouflage. For example, a Screech Owl will use its wings to disguise itself to match the bark of the tree it is lodged in. This type of camouflage is called background matching. Camouflage is also influenced by its behavior. For example, a zebra and its stripes will camouflage from a color blinded lion. A lion is a zebras main predator and a zebras black and white stripes cause it to blend into a golden savanna of Africa and its habitat because of the color blindness of the lion. Fish such as flounder almost exactly match their habitat along the speckled sea floor. If you take a look at a squirrel or a deer, they will match or resemble earth tones. Another type of camouflage or coloration differences is called aposematism. Another name for it is warning coloration. Warning coloration allows for the predator to be aware of the organisms toxic or dangerous characteristics. Species that demonstrate these traits are larva and adult stages of the monarch butterfly. The monarch butterfly is patterned with a orange, black, and white pattern but the monarch caterpillar is striped with a yellow, black, and white. Monarchs have the ability to eat milk weed which is a poison to many birds which will upset a birds stomach. These bright colors warn birds that the upset stomach may not be worth the meal.
