Neurogenic Assessment and Intervention
Neurogenic motor speech disorders are challenging to all involved, whether they are developmental or acquired, non-progressive or degenerative. As we see in Chapter 10 of Introduction to Communication Disorders, there is often frustration due to the fact that the affected individual can formulate the statement, but cannot be understood. Cerebral Palsy presents non-progressive neurological difficulties, while Parkinson’s disease or ALS is progressive and degenerative. How do the assessment and intervention techniques used with each neurogenic motor speech disorder differ? How are they similar? How might your treatment look if you were the afflicted individual? Make sure to include all individuals who are involved in assessment and intervention in formulating your response.
