Grading Criteria for Leadership Journal During the course you are expected to create an opportunity (5 total) for personal leadership growth. The emphasis is on changing how you manage challenging situations in order to improve your ability to influence others in a positive way. In general, we are most effective when we identify and reflect on situations before they occur, especially when emotions are likely to be involved. Your journal entries will be evaluated with the following criteria in mind. Each section is evaluated on a 5 point scale (where 1= significantly below expectations, 3=met expectations, and 5 = Wow! exceeded expectations). 1. Introduce Situation (20%) Rating criteria: 5 = Succinct and articulate statement of a meaningful situation and what you hoped to achieve. How you have struggled with similar situations in the past, and how you would like to handle such situations. Clear action plan. 3 = Decent identification of a situation, but weak connections to past and future goals and growth. Situation lacks depth or importance. Poorly developed plan. 1 = Insufficient discussion of the situation, and little to no justification for investing in the situation. Trivial situation. No plan for action. 2. Response to Situation (40%) Rating criteria: 5 = Outstanding but succinct description of how important situation unfolded; Insightful description of how you handled the situation and how you felt, as well as how the other party/parties responded and likely felt. Digs into important outcomes of situation (surface level and deeper) 3 = Sufficient description of the situation, but largely surface level description with little insight. Some important aspects of the situation may have been overlooked. 1 = Insufficient understanding of the situation and underlying problems. No critical thinking demonstrated and many important aspects of the situation were overlooked. 3. Growth (40%) Rating criteria: 5 = Clear and insightful reflection on what went well and not so well in the situation. Strong connection to “G” step of critical thinking. Demonstrates personal growth and plan for future growth. 3 = Summarizes situation and outcome. Some evidence of growth and fuzzy goals for future. Demonstrates some heuristic thinking or mental traps. 1 = Superficial treatment of situation; Little evidence of growth or goals for future growth. Obvious mental traps.

I spent my first weeks at work observing , planning, arranging work load and working with a small group of collogues. This has given me a valuable insight into several important issues related to teamworking. Recalling the experience of having a conflict between our team members, generated an understanding of the importance of effective communication. Being in a team is certainly not an easy task due to different thoughts and viewpoints, each member has an opinion, all of which have to be integrated with the overall objects of the work project. This was one of the challenges that our group faced, besides to the lack of consolidation and some issues around understanding and communication which led to many obstacles. At that time, I found myself in a difficult situation most of the time, having to deal with a mixture of feelings. From the beginning of the project, I felt a bit awkward as some members seemed unpleasant with their allocated tasks. It was extremely difficult to keep our team together, as a result I found myself doing all the research and presentation and ended up doing most of the work to deliver it on time. Teamwork projects require involvement from all the members. Lack of team contribution and participation may affect the quality of the work and overall outcome. Accordingly, I suggested to develop a plan for this current project and future projects to avoid such conflicts, as well as assign a group leader to explain the responsibilities of each team member in detail. First of all, I arranged a meeting to discuss the project, share and analyze different perspectives and ensure a full understating. In addition, the team discussed the challenges and tried to help members where necessary to uphold togetherness and overcome any future hurdle caused by misunderstanding or disagreement. At the end of the meeting, each member was given a role  which together formed the complete project. Furthermore, we sat times for other future meetings to follow up, observe the assigned tasks, give feedbacks, solve problems and correct actions if needed. I believed that such plan will contribute to the success of the team and work towards delivering the most credible conclusion and eventually the project objectives. This team formation helped the group to complete the tasks as required when they were effectively engaged compared to previous situation where the group was randomly organized. Ultimately it was obvious that the success of the project was a result of efficient teamwork. At the beginning, I felt confused but confident about doing the work alone and facing some challenged tasks which will help me in future. I also, understood that whatever I can accomplish by myself will not always be equal to working in a group. However, when it comes to the teamwork, I believe that it is important to establish strong and clear steps of team working for delivering future achievement. Moreover, This opportunity allowed me to express thoughts and ideas and let me improve my communication skills as well as managing complex situation Finally, I developed significant understanding about the importance of structured and well-organized work teams in order to succeed.

During my previous work experience as an executive hospital assistant/member of quality project team, I came up with a new idea of digitalizing all the hospital records by implementing an electronic record system. However, it was not an easy task since some employees were unwilling to accept the move, which brought conflict in the department. Most of the employees argued that the hospital was not ready to implement the electronic record system in terms of financial preparation and knowledge on dealing with the electronic record system. I decided to spend more time with different employees in a different department to discuss this new idea. The following is a small conversation between one of the employees and myself: Me : Good Morning Lisa , I have an idea. Lisa : Good Morning, what is your idea? Please share it. Me: We digitalize all hospital records by implementation of electronic record system? Lisa: How will this help the hospital and how prepared are we to implement this idea? I feel it is not the right time to come up with such idea, the hospital is okay with the old system Me: The quality of service delivery will improve and we have all the required resources to implement the idea. On matter of times it is the right time because of the inflexible competition due to high level of technology from our competitor. Lisa: Personally I am not prepared since I have no any idea on how to use the electronic record system and I feel it is not the right time and it will be a waste of money and effort. Me: all staff members will undergo training after the system is complete and ready for use. This will help reduce the fear and all worries. Lisa: I somewhat disagree now but can we go on and consult the rest of the members. Me: Ok thank you so much for your time, we agree to disagree. From the interaction with employees, I realized that we should work on the idea as a team. Teamwork requires clear communication of the idea to the employees and taking time to listen to their feedback. This will make it easier to understand employees’ main areas of concern, which will solve conflicts within the hospital. I felt it was a challenging task listening to every employee’s views and opinions since some employees were against the idea entirely, and others did not even show interest to respond because they felt they were not part of the process. After two weeks of communicating with the employees, I came up with a plan to avoid any future conflict. The plan involved establishing an innovation team that will ensure the hospital is up to date in terms of new applications in line with the new technology. The team will ensure that the new ideas are clearly communicated to the employees on time. This will result in teamwork among the employees. Teamwork makes it easy to implement new ideas since every employee will feel to be a part of the process. Finally, the plan will include an orientation program that will ensure employees will get all the basic skills and knowledge needed, to use the new ideas that will be implemented. The plan was implemented immediately by establishing an innovation team, which comprised of one member from each department for representation. After establishing the innovation team, we immediately communicated the new idea of electronic records to the employees for consideration. The employees expressed what they felt should be considered during the implementation. Then employees also were given a week of training to make it easier to implement the electronic record system. I learned that I could work alone, but to accomplish work more effectively, it needs teamwork. The implementation of an electronic record system was confronted with a lot of resistance by most employees, which brought conflict in the hospital. But I realized that teamwork with clear communication makes it easier to accomplish any task within a short time. Proper interaction with the employees helped me improve my communication skills, and my leadership skills were sharpened as well. In the future, I will always consider teamwork and communication as a priority to accomplish any project.
