B. Now head to the library. Find ONE secondary-source book that would help you find out more about the term. The book will probably focus of larger or different issues, and the key terms might not be in the title – you have to figure out the larger topic and go from there. Find key terms in the book’s index to endure that the book covers the term, even if only briefly. C. The book MUST have been published within the last 40 years or so. The book must be a scholarly secondary source written for an adult audience. It should be a single book rather than a collection of essays (look at the table of contents to be sure). The book must not be a reference book, an encyclopedia, or a dictionary, even if it is specialized (i.e. the Encyclopedia of American Colonial Women will not work for this assignment). It also should not be a broad textbook or general-interest series. Go for something scholarly and specific. D. Do not ask library staff to look up books for you. Get into the stacks and find the books yourselves. The goals here are exploration and discovery: what do professional historians write about? E. Photocopy the title page, the page that shows the copyright date, and ONE page that is relevant to the term you have chosen. Write the Call Number on one of those pages (if it isn’t on the copyright page already). Turn in those photocopies with the rest of this assignment. You must each find your own books – you may not share a book with another student. F. Write one full paragraph (about 150 – 200 words) telling me the content of the book as it relates to the term. (don’t read the whole thing – look at chapters titles and topic sentences and the introduction). First, verify briefly (in writing) that the book is a scholarly secondary source that fits the criteria in C and D, above. Then, talk about the book. What is the author’s perspective on the question or topic? What larger topics does the book deal with – what’s the larger point of the book? How does the term fit into the author’s larger purpose? G. Grading in this section depends on writing quality, the suitability of the book, and your ability to figure out the main ideas. A big part of the grade revolves around whether you can follow the instructions in “C”, above – find a recently published, scholarly secondary source. Be careful of reprints – some books might have a recent publication dates, though they are reprints of much older books. The original publication date is important here.
