Annually the FBI publishes its Uniform Crime Report (UCR). The report is categorized by violent crimes, those against people, and property crimes. The data to support the report is comprised of information reported annually to the FBI from over 17,000 law enforcement agencies. Recognizing that classification of crimes may vary from state to state, identify a crime (burglary, theft, robbery, etc.) from your state and review the description of the crime as outlined in the state law. Briefly compare this information with the crime statistics for your city or town as reported in the UCR.
In addressing your classmates’ postings, discuss whether the actual crime rates measure up to your preconceptions. Why or why not?
