Many factors influence how and when change may occur in clients. It is important for social workers to recognize and acknowledge when the client is in a particular phase of change. Doing so provides key opportunities for social workers to support client self-efficacy and address ambivalent feelings the client may have about the change process. Social workers should take care to use professional skills to develop motivational questions and responses to encourage clients through the change process.
